1. In blistering stage soak hands or feet in cool potassium permanganate solution (diluted 1 in 8,000 to a pale pink color) for 15 minutes and letting them dry in the air twice daily.

2. Apply steroid ointments after the soaks and in the peeling stage to reduce itch and discomfort.

Discoid Eczema: Many people have dry scaly itchy patches on their limbs or body, which may be severe and blister or weep. Stress makes them worse. Doctors prescribe steroid ointments applied 2-3 times a day.

Lichen Simplex: People with an atopic eczema background may develop a thick patch of eczema usually in the nape of the neck or leg. Steroid ointments, tapes or injections are administered into the patch to stop itch.

Seborrheic Eczema: A common form of eczema – a minor nuisance but can be severe. This type of eczema takes the form of dandruff with occasional redness and itching of the scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes. It affects area behind the ears, center of the chest, back, body fold i.e. armpits, groins, around breasts, pubic area, genitals, area around back passage causing redness, scaling, itching, discomfort and embarrassment.

Contact Eczema: Also known as contact dermatitis. In this case the skin reacts to contact with a substance by becoming red and itchy. In a severe reaction the skin blisters or weeps. Swelling may be marked and close the eyes if the face is affected. The skin may become dry and scaly in chronic cases. This type of eczema occurs at the site of contact with the allergen, especially at the areas where the skin is this (eyelids and back of hands). The thick palms and soles are rarely affected. Such type of eczema is sometimes life long and is more likely to occur if the skin is broken or damp. Testing for contact eczema is conducted by a patch test (applying a battery of allergens to the skin of back applied under metal discs) for 48 hours. This eczema is caused due to reaction with certain metals, hypo-allergic cosmetics, hair dyes, plants, perfumes, cheap ornaments, rubber, PVC goods, chemicals and the effect of antibiotics. To cope with contact eczema, avoid allergens that cause allergic reaction. Steroid creams give relief if applied in early stage. Contact with certain foods e.g. fish or eggs and animal fur sometimes cause allergic reaction. The following remedies are suggested:

Beware of dry air: Dermatitis is aggravated by dehumidified air, especially during winter months. Forces air heat leaves a drying effect causing itching of eczema or dermatitis.

Bathing with lukewarm water: It reduces the chances of infection and helps soften the skin. But avoid water that is too hot or too cold.

Oatmeal bath: Use oatmeal as a soap substitute. For the bath, pour 2 cups of colloidal oatmeal available at pharmacies into lukewarm water.

Wear cotton clothes: Cotton clothes worn next to the skin are much better than wool or polyster. Avoid wearing synthetic or itchy fabrics and tight or ill-fitting clothes.

Avoid antiperspirants: Metallic salts such as aluminium chloride, aluminium sulphate and zirconium chlorohydrate can cause irritation in people with sensitive skin.
